Sample Candidate Letter


Dear Firecrafter Candidate:


Congratulations on completing your candidacy at summer camp and fulfilling the first twelve requirements of the candidate card. Your trail to the Mystic Fire has but one last step, requirement thirteen: To complete successfully the inspections, reviews, and Unknown Test of the Firecrafter Ritual. I would like to invite you to fulfill your quest for the Fire and attend the Firecrafter Ritual.

The 2022 Firecrafter Rituals will be held at Camp Kikthawenund and Camp Ransburg. The Midsummer Ritual will be on July 15-17 at Camp Kikthawenund in Frankton, INthe Grand Ritual will be on August 12-14 at Camp Kikthawenund in Frankton, IN . You must be in camp by 5:00-6:30 pm Friday night. The Ritual begins with or without you; therefore it is imperative you arrive on time. Please eat before arriving Friday night as there will not be dinner provided. You MUST stay the entire weekend. You will be free to leave at 11:00am on Sunday at the Mid-Summer Ritual or 12:00pm on Sunday of the Grand Ritual. Inter-denominational services will be held on Sunday.

Come dressed in work clothes, and pack the following REQUIRED materials:

  • Class A uniform.
  • Water bottle.
  • Flashlight.
  • Scouts BSA handbook.
  • Masks. (While COVID-19 guidelines are constantly changing, it will still be mandatory to bring a mask for large gatherings indoors and while outdoors, unable to social distance.)
  • Pack a breakfast of 1 or 2 eggs, a meat, bread, and a hot drink. (Refrigerate by small cooler with ice or cold pack, this will be cooked on Saturday morning. All other meals will be provided)
  • Cooking gear. (On Saturday morning you will cook the food that you bring on an open fire, so it is suggested you bring a metal mess kit or small metal pan you can set on the coals of your fire to cook.)
  • Shelter. (Friday night you will be sleeping out on a trail and will need some sort of tarp and rope to set up a shelter.)
  • Tent. (Upon arrival you will set up a tent in a designated area to store some gear and use as sleeping quarters on Saturday evening.)
  • Fire-by-Friction set and fire building materials (bird’s nest, foil, etc.).
  • Medical Form.

The Ritual fee is $45, payable when you arrive. The Ritual fee includes insignia, certification, a picture of your Ritual Class, membership dues until age 21, and all meals except breakfast on Saturday. You will be given the opportunity to shower, so you may bring anything necessary for a shower. DO NOT BRING fire-making materials (matches, lighters, etc), a watch, an alarm clock, or a radio. Bringing any of these items may result in DISQUALIFICATION from the Ritual. You are responsible for what you bring, so be sure everything has your name on it.

Review your Handbook, practice your Scouting skills, and hone your Fire-by Friction abilities. During the course of the Ritual, you will be tested in all areas of Scouting.  On behalf of the Firecrafter Council Committee, we would like to wish you the best of luck as you prepare for the Ritual. However, luck is an elusive element. It is only by DOING YOUR VERY BEST that can you hope to successfully meet the challenges before you. It is toward this goal we encourage you. Keep your set dry, your mind alert, and your heart true.
