Welcome to the oganization! If you are a youth in Scouting America, that means you have a lot of potential to make an impact on Firecrafter, and on scouting as a whole.
Firecrafter at its core is a summer camp retention program, so in that spirit, the best way to be active in Firecrafter is to go to summer camp! Each year, Crossroads of America Council hosts 3 main summer camp programs. To learn more in depth about each, please visit the summer camps page on Crossroads of America Council's website.
1. Camp Belzer, located in Indianapolis, Indiana, offers cub scout day camp and discovery day camp each year. Camp Belzer focuses on providing cub scouts with adventure and educational programming, developing the same skills emphasized by scouting and Firecrafter to build scouts into great friends, servants, and leaders. Cub scouts who attend Camp Belzer have the oppurtunity to earn the Cub Spark Award.
2. Camp Kikthawenund, located in Frankton, Indiana, offers a large range of activities as a part of their Family Camp and Arrow of Light camping experiences. Camp Kikthawenund provides oppurtunities for campers to earn the webelos campers and webelos firelight ranks of Cub Scouts, as well as to earn in the Cub Spark Award.
3. Camp Ransburg, located in Bloomington, Indiana, offers a long-term camping experience for scouts in Scouting America. Ransburg's yearly program offers many oppurtunities for Firecrafter leadership and advancement. Campers are able to earn the ranks of Camper and Woodsman, and even Firecrafter itself. Firecrafters that attend Ransburg as campers are able to volunteer to help grade campfires for Firecrafter candidates, as well as to help in the various Firecrafter ceremonies that take place over the camping week, such as the overnighter and induction ceremonies.
Staffing a summer camp is a great way to participate in Firecrafter and scouting as a whole! Staff are able to earn the Firecrafter ranks while they are a member of camp staff, as well as participate in camp Firecrafter leadership. Each camp has positions elected for in-camp leadership, as well as oppurtunities for non-elected Firecrafters to volunteer: grading campfires and participating in ceremonies. Both Camps Belzer and Kikthawenund have a "Fire Week" where staff are given the oppurtunity to work towards the rank of Firecrafter. You can apply to any of these three camps here.
The best way to become active as a youth outside of the camping season is to participate in events. Please see the Embers & Flames page to find your ember and see your ember's events. If you would like to view council wide events, or just all events in general, please visit the events page.
Beyond attending events, members can also help plan events! Please fill out the event coordinator application form if you wish to volunteer for leadership roles at council events. Ritual leadership team is an incredible oppurtunity for Firecrafters to hold a leadership role while becoming more active within the organization. To participate in the ritual leadership team, please fill out the ritual leadership team application form. (Form currently not ready.)
On top of helping with events, youth Firecrafters can also be elected into a leadership position. Elections for these positions are held at the end of Grand Ritual every year. Positions that are elected at Grand Ritual are as follows: Ember Secretary/Treasurer, Vice-Chief, and Chief, Flame Vice-Chief and Chief, and Counile Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-Chief, and Chief. You can learn more about these roles and their listed duties in either the by-laws, or the council officers page.
All scouts and scouters are welcomed to nominate Firecrafters for the Minisino honor. You can find this form on the forms and nominations page.
From inspiring and guiding youth to advance to directly assisting in Firecrafter, adult volunteers are an essential part of the Firecrafter program.
The best way for an alumni to assist the organization is to encourage scouts from their units to attend summer camp andassist them to earn Firecrafter ranks! The individual ranks and oppurtunities offered by each camp are outlined above in the section on how youth can be involved.
On top of encouraging youth to attend summer camps and earn Firecrafter ranks, alumni are also able to directly participate in Firecrafter activities. Alumni are encouraged to be part of a ritual's cook/clean crew, an essential role at every council event. Alumni can help with elected positions by becoming an advisor, or associate advisor of embers and flames, or even council itself. Alumni can also run for positions within the alumni association: president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer.
Alumni are encouraged to nominate fellow alumni for the rank of Firecrafter, as well as nominate youth and alumni for the Minisino honor. You can find both of these forms on the forms and nominations page.
Firecrafter is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
